I was once hired to take over management of a group that had been without a
manager for over a year. The first time I sat in on one of their style
meetings I let them go on like that for about a half an hour. Drank two
cups of coffee. Ate a bagel with cream cheese. Read my email.
Eventually, it was either stop them or start clipping my fingernails, so I
tapped on the conference table to get their attention, thanked them for
their input and told them that I'd make a decision on their issues and have
the style guide revised by the end of the week. I learned later that they
had been having that same meeting on the same issues every week for the
entire time since their previous manager had left.
