I got a lot of use out of *Designing Effective Instruction* back in the day. The 6th edition (current version) came out in 2003, which I have not read (don't want to pay $100 for it), so I can't speak to whether it addresses the interactive way people learn today. That said, I developed a lot of instructional design in the late 90s/early 00s, and both the book and the post-grad course I took were very useful.

I've been a tech writer for many years, doing mostly manuals. My latest
project involves instructional design. Specifically, I'll be designing
presentations meant to train a live audience how to use specific software.
I know there are many overlaps with traditional tech writing, but I would
guess that there are also considerations for instructional design that
depart from standard tech writing.

Do any of you have advice on what to do/ what not to do? Any favorite
resources you could point me to?
