I've always updated copyrights by changing the last date in the range.
For example, if the old copyright notice was (c)2007-2010 Acme Products,
Inc., I'd update it to (c)2007-2012 Acme Products, Inc..

I saw a style guide rule that said not to update the range unless the
document was revised in each year in the range. For example, if Iast
edited that document in 2010, the new notice would be  (c)2007-2010,
2012 Acme Products, Inc.. This makes no sense to me: the 2010 copyright
wouldn't expire until 2105, so who cares if it wasn't edited in 2010?

I find nothing on copyright.gov to support this rule. In fact, you don't
even need to include a notice:
