I looked at several of the links that a search for Futura Thin brings up. None seem to be a reputable font vendor, and some look too shady for me to visit. The link you provided, for instance, immediately attempts to download/run FuturaThinFontInstaller.exe -- um, no-o-o.

Nobody seems to specify a foundry for this font. It appears to be one of the thousands of cheap-junk free TrueType fonts floating around, and I wouldn't use it for my product's documentation -- but I guess that's your client's decision.

Ah, I did find it at the Linotype site, http://www.linotype.com/search/futura, which I believe is a real font of fonts :-), and they've got lots of Futura font families that seem to be the real, legit fonts, and the few I looked at had the non-printing characters, and all were priced as I'd expect real fonts to be priced.

So I'm sure the problem is that the client got some sort of free font file and this is the result. I'll work with them to make sure we use a properly licensed font. (They're new to Tech Pubs and so there's lots to educate them about :-).
