Gabrielle, that is non sequitur. 

Since when did "learning about" anything require degrees? My impression has
been -- and I am an old person --  that "learning about" anything requires
only intelligence, curiosity, talent,  determination, necessity, or any
combination of those.

If you're going to become a technical communicator, you'd best start by
"focusing" on the link between  clear writing and clear thinking.
