With a follow-up:

No one (except for one kid who really asked for it) was actually hit
with it, but he'd smack the desks. Hard.

Same guy would also cure in-class daydreamers by having them stand in
front of the class, arms outstretched with a dictionary in each hand,
while he taught his lessons.

Funny thing is a few of us (myself included) actually got a long with
him well outside of class (he's one of the reasons I chose a writing
profession). But in class he had no favorites.
