replacing text with visuals (was: introducing steps - translation issues)

This might make the increased use of non-textual, graphical material
more attractive -- and that could lead to a different set of problems.
Does anyone recall anything from the list archives on this? Or does
anyone have any (new) observations or stories to share on the issues
of moving to a more visual, non-textual mode of explanation?
