Who says "cycle through" isn't 'appropriate'?

I think its an intuitive enough term that just about anybody would understand what it means.... in fact, I just used "...to cycle through different display modes" in one of my manuals yesterday.

Here's a tip though... rather than using descriptive passages, such as "has a black background with white text"... if you really need to give readers an idea of what they're dealing with, why not include a screen shot instead? Then they can see what the arrows and crowded markers (whatever they are) look like. Its quicker and easier for readers to take in info from an illustration, rather than having to plow through a long string of words describing the window.

Hello all! This is my first email to the listserv, though I've been reading it for some weeks. I hope somebody here might offer a good suggestion because I am stumped.

In a document I have written:

"The InfoWindow, which opens when a marker or bubble is tapped, has a black background with white text. If multiple markers are close to each other, the InfoWindow includes arrows to let the user cycle through those markers. The report metrics are displayed in the InfoWindow in the order that they are listed on the report."

I am told that "cycle through" isn't appropriate to technical writing, but can't think of a better phrase, though one must exist.

Any ideas?

All the best,
Ryan
