Please. I spent several hours yesterday trying to implement a CSS-only
drop-down menu for our help files. Works great in Firefox, but... not at all
in IE8, which is of course the Company Standard. It's possible if you can
trigger IE8's standard-compliant mode, but because we're using RoboHelp, I
can't.
IE9 is supposed to be much more standards-compliant, but I don't expect my
current client, a monolithic company, to upgrade anytime soon.
Regarding CSS media queries, I'm not sure they will work with, or at least
you'd have to plan around, frameset output from the traditional help
vendors. Thus ties in two discussions for the week, and now I'm home and
it's beer o'clock.

So, basically, it's "second verse, same as the first." The W3C continues to
evolve sensible, universal standards that promote device independence, and
software companies continue to ignore it by producing competing products,
using a dizzying array of dissimilar approaches; ones that confuse and
complicate the field, as well as add needless expense for end users. This is
all in the name of expedience and competitive advantage. If we all use the
same standards, where is our selling proposition?
Bottom line: most of the effort that goes into writing competing,
incompatible software, as well as adaptation to that poorly designed
software, could be better spent innovating on top of consistent, standard
platforms.
