TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I am an Assistant Professor of Technical Communication at the University of North Texas and am undertaking a research study on editing tests (i.e., any test used to assess the writing and editing proficiencies of prospective employees). I am analyzing these tests for the types and frequencies of errors and then comparing them to existing research on errors in college writing.
So far I have over 40 tests, but I would like to expand my data sample. Would you please pass my contact information on to anyone who uses a test and might want to participate in my study? If interested, you can also read the preliminary results of this study at http://www.kokedit.com/BoettgerSTCProceeding_11.pdf, which I just presented at the annual Society for Technical Communication Summit.
My study will not disclose company names or any content from the tests themselves—my results will just present an anonymous comparison of the types of errors. I will also sign a non-disclosure agreement to further protect the integrity of a company's test. Interested participants can email me a copy of their test and answer key (if available) as well as the state and primary industry of their company (such as "Texas, travel").
Please feel free to contact me at ryan -dot- boettger -at- unt -dot- edu with any questions. My study complies with the research regulations outlined by the University of North Texas' Institutional Review Board.
