Hi Tanya,

Can you explain what the software architect is talking about when he (or she) says "edit in-place?"

If he means that he wants to be able to edit the drawings in MS Word, then he can embed visio documents in the document (Word 2007: insert > object > create new > Microsoft Visio Drawing). Then, he can edit it as he types in the Microsoft Word document. Or, if he wants to create a drawing in Visio, edit it separately, and link it to the Microsoft Word document so that it automatically updates, then he can place a link to the document (Word 2007: insert > object > create from file > link to file (check it) > browse (attach the file) > ok). The document updates when the word file is opened again or when you right-click the figure and select "update link" from the menu that appears. Are these features available in Word for Mac 2011?

If this won't help, can you give us more detail on the issues that he is experiencing? Thanks!

An aside: I feel your/his pain. While Word is good for some things, it can make certain tasks difficult.

All,

I write for the government, which means MS Word is pretty much my world,
with occasional (though rare) ventures into the Adobe Suite. Thus, most of
my experience is just using the MS Office tools. However, one of our
software architects asked me the following question, and I don't know the
answer. Any suggestions?

"I find myself running into the limitations of Microsoft Word (2011 edition
for that Mac) with respect to embedded drawings. The built-in drawing tools
seem quite inadequate and embedding Visio diagrams that I can't edit
in-place is frustrating. What suite of tools do you recommend for technical
documentation that includes quantities of embedded figures and diagrams?"

Thoughts?
