Selective spell-check in Outlook 2010

Outlook 2010 seems to selectively abandon spell-check in plain-text
messages. For example, it always catches the misspelling "emvironment"
in HTML-formatted messages. But in plain-text messages, that same
misspelling is sometimes caught and sometimes not. This is true not only
for the "check spelling as you type" function, but also for manual
spell-check through F7. I haven't yet found the variable that triggers
the failure. I haven't seen it yet in other Office 2010 apps.
