I expect to cling like a barnacle to the job I have. Given my age and the state of the technical writing market, this may be my last chance to save up more than chicken feed. But I realize that anything can happen at any time. The old notions of "job security" have been totally swept away, globalization has opened the door to more job seekers than ever before, and I expect the current state of the market to remain for at least a decade. It's in employers' interests to have lots of lower-cost resources to choose between, and any 'recovery' in our economy is going to be a lot slower than anyone who works for a paycheck would like.

And despite what I just wrote, I actually feel pretty good right now. I know there is no safety this side of the grave, but I found the job I've been looking for the last 20 years and for the time being I'm enjoying it. I intend for this coming year to live dirt cheap and take freelance jobs on the side and pile up all the money I can get my hands on. I plan to be the fattest capitalist pig I can be.

Happy New Year and good luck to everyone.

I expect nothing anymore. I have a great new job, but given the number
of layoffs I've had over the years, I've learned to not take anything
for granted.
