Structured authoring 101

Printed in tabular format using Word, we have numerous software test sheets
that include numerous repetitive steps. These could easily be modularized
for reuse, and we're just beginning to investigate structured authoring.

Have any you of used structured authoring for this purpose? Which software
tools are you using? Are there any really good open source tools we should
be looking at?
