Ken, the batch functionality within xplorer2 has some pretty decent file-renaming functionality, among its many other fine features that blow the doors off Windows Explorer. You can download the trial and/or buy the paid version at http://www.zabkat.com/. Check the batch, script, and "using tokens" section of the user manual for details. 2xExplorer lite (the predecessor product) remains free http://www.netez.com/2xExplorer/, and I believe there's a lite version of xplorer2, as well.

Subject: changing multiple partial file names Windows Vista
Before I create my parts book in FrameMaker 8.0, I need to _partially_ change the machine model in the over 60 files that will go into this book.
Current file names are "SRC660 (unique parts assembly name).fm"
Desired new file should be "SRC550 (unique parts assembly name).fm"
Windows Vista (that's what they use here and it ain't gonna change) allows total filename changes followed by a sequential number within parentheses, thus all renamed files take on the total name of the first renamed file followed by a (1), then a (2) and so on.
That is obviously not gonna work here.
Is anybody aware of a freeware product that allows replacement of _only specific characters_ within multiple filenames?
