I know this is not appropriate for children, but I'm reminded of one my
fondest memories from high school.

Every year, my favorite teacher (psychology) would put her students
through this exercise: Standing in front of the class, she would
proclaim herself to be an alien from another planet, and all she knows
is their language. The goal of the exercise was to instruct her as to
how to smoke a cigarette (she was a notorious heavy smoker). And she
would stand there doing EXACTLY what the students described for her to
do. I really wish she had video taped one of those classes so you could
see just how hilarious her performance was.

I think there were two important things her students took away from this
lesson: That everyday activities are way more complicated than we tend
to be aware of, and that others don't necessarily have the same
information background that you have.

BTW: She claimed that in all the years she performed the stunt, no class
was ever able to get a cigarette smoked. I know our class wasn't able
to.

Our company always organizes an excellent program for the Take Your Kids
to Work day, which is going to be on Wednesday. I've always given a
short presentation on technical writing, and then given them a short
exercise - writing the instructions for making a peanut butter sandwich.
I'm getting bored with that though, and wondered if anyone had any ideas
on something else I could give them; preferably something that doesn't
require a lot of preparation.

Thanks in advance,
