A personal choice (if allowed): for semi-formal documents and reports I like
to use Trebuchet MS - 10pt at 1.5 line space.

I personally began using Souvenir when I stepped into a publications editing

position for a professional society (for human resources managers, of all 
things) back in 1979 (pre-desktop publishing days). And I've used it
whenefer 
possible ever since then. It resembles Times New Roman but it isn't Times
New 
Roman.

It's what they used to call a "friendlier" font (i.e., more easily read).

And I still believe serifed fonts are more readable for body text and such
and 
that Arial and other sans serifed fonts are better used for headlines,
captions, 
table text and the like.

Plus, the readability problems of confusing an uppercase letter "I" (proper 
pronoun for myself) and a lowercase letter "l" (the one after "k" in our 
alphabet) can be a problem.

But feelings are feelings and preferences ar preferences and statistics can
say 
anything you want them to.

So try Souvenir and see how it goes.

I discovered that my boss hates hates hates Times New Roman with a passion.

So other than Times New Roman, what are considered acceptable fonts for a 
professional document?

I know Arial is one of them, but any others?

I need to amend my style guide.
