Mike:  thanks for pointing this out.  It led me to the Word 2010 blog, which contains this gem about numbered lists and linked / not linked styles:

I suspect that much of it applies to 2007 as well.  Those of you who loathe 2007 might want to give 2010 a chance - it permits modifying the ribbon and has some other good cleanups.
