Yo Jim,

Regarding Point 1, I connected the laptop hard drive to my desktop via a usb
cable, then scanned the laptop HD using Norton Internet Security already
installed on my desktop. I did not install Norton on the laptop HD.

As for Point 2, I'll definitely check into that today.

Ken, be sure to:

1. Totally and completely remove Norton before installing MacAfee -- two AV
programs rarely play well together. You may need to download a removal tool for
it from the Symantec web site. Norton does not have a reputation for going away
nicely just via Add/Remove Programs. And/or use an uninstall tool such as Revo
Uninstaller and do the most extreme removal option possible.

2. Make sure MacAfee free from AT&T does not have any diminished functionality.
Typically, AVs from ISPs have not been as full-featured as the for-pay programs.

If MacAfee is scaled down: either buy the full version, stick with Norton, or
look for a full-featured option 3 with the ability to schedule auto updates
(Trend Micro, Kaspersky, AVG, Avira, etc.)

HTH,
Jim

To all,

First, thanks once more to all for the great suggestions on how to best get my
daughter's laptop up and running after a major virus attack. After seriously
considering all suggestions, I opted for physical removal of the hard drive from
the laptop and scanning it using Norton Internet Security via usb cable from my
desktop.

It turned out that drive removal was just too easy (loosen two screws, carefully
lift away the protective plastic cover, slide the HD back about half an inch
until it disengages from its connector port, then carefully lift the drive up
and out). After running LiveUpdate on my desktop, I cabled the laptop HD to a
usb port and set Norton to scan the drive. It took several hours, but the
results were one instance of Trojan.FakeAV, an instance of Trojan.Pidief and two
other instances of another "Malware . . " something or other.

I had Norton "fix" all threats, disconnected the HD from the desktop,
reinstalled it in its laptop (cover and all) and powered up. Next to hearing my
VW beetle engine start and run like new after completing various engine rebuilds
so many years ago, there's almost nothing so satisfying as seeing the laptop
boot successfully and cleanly with no more fake virus warnings and lockups.

I powered it down and there it stays until I install MacAfee on it tonight; as
an AT&T customer, I can download and install the full version of MacAfee from
AT&T for free that updates itself, etc.

15-year-old Yvette was really nice (and thankful) to me last night after she saw
her terminal up and running cleanly before we shut it down pending the MacAfee
installation tonight.

Second, the FrameMaker package, the Win95 Operating System CD and the
Win95 Office Suite CD's are now promised, but I still have those nice manuals
described in my earlier e-mail.

Just let me know . . .
