Three notable gaps in Windows 7 Explorer

I posted these to the Windows Secrets Lounge (formerly Woody's Lounge).
The Loungers confirmed that these items, all available in Windows
Explorer in Win XP, were left out of Windows 7:

* The Search box can't be removed from the Start menu without getting
rid of Windows Search altogether. This adds an extra keystroke to every
Start menu launch, since you have to Tab past the Search box.

* Windows Explorer used to have a decent set of toolbar icons (the
defaults were Back, Forward, Up, etc., but there were others). In
general, the Explorer interface was easily configurable in Win XP.

* In Win XP, ALT+left/right arrow moves you completely through the path
of previously opened folders, regardless of their place in the
hierarchy.
But in Win 7, ALT+left arrow moves you backward only as long as you're
moving upward; if you were working in "sibling/cousin" folders, instead
of "parent/child" folders, you can't get there via the keyboard.
For example, in Win XP: You start at C:\, go to C:\Able, then
C:\Able\Bodied. Then you press Backspace twice to return to C:\. Then
you go to C:\Baker, then C:\Baker\Patacake. In Win XP, ALT+left arrow
will then step you all the way back to C:\Able\Bodied.
But Win 7 stops at C:\.
