A similar issue was dealt with here:

The gist is to use Python to automate OpenOffice, which is far easier
than the vagaries of worrying about that abomination Visual Basic.
Remember, Word relies on VBA, which is basically VB6, a language tied
together with duct tape, ActiveX controls and string.
