More trivia about the Hoover clan....the President's brother perfected heap
leaching of gold ore using cyanide at the mines in Bodie, California. Heap
leaching is a process that sprays a dilute solution of cyanide on a big pile
of crushed ore and as the dilution moves down through the pile gold attaches
to the cyanide and is extracted at the end by running it through charcoal.
It is still used today. The Fort Knox mine north of Fairbanks uses that
process on a low-grade massive deposit.
