It's starting to sound like you have some kind of document corruption.
You might want to try a Maggie (copy everything but the last pgraph mark
in the document to a new document).

The CTRL+A looked like it was going to work, because it revealed that
English(US)was used by a mixture of the text. Sadly, reapplying English
to the selected text did not do the trick. I'm now very familiar with
where to look in Proofing thanks to this experience. Grrrr.
