I do it sometimes too and as I said in an earlier response to his thread, it is not disagreeing with the method of first 'knowing what it is' - this is simply using written expression to help clarify things.
Some other posters talked about this use of a 'jot list' and one poster referred to a pdf that was prepared by the Plain English Campaign.
