After posting yesterday on this topic, I ran into a fascinating backup
system called CrashPlan: <http://www.crashplan.com>

These folks have downloadable software supporting Windows, Mac, or
Linux. There is a free version for personal use that appears to be
ad-supported, and a paid version without the ads and which adds
real-time continuous backup.

In addition, CrashPlan has a choice of any one or even several
different backup solutions--another drive on your machine (including
removable media), another machine locally on your network, another
machine on the Internet, or a central offline storage service--of
which the CrashPlan people have a very inexpensive one.

This way, if you have a friend or relative with an Internet-connected
machine and who approves, you can back up your files to that machine
as well as host backups for others. The software automatically
encrypts and compresses the files as well, to maximize network
performance and security. The free version uses 128 bit encryption,
the paid version uses 448 bit for added security.

After spending two days to back up about 20 GB of my files to Adrive,
I'm seriously contemplating checking out CrashPlan myself.

It appears that this service may be the "do it all" kind of thing that
would make life far easier, and I will certainly be checking it out in
further detail.
