Then what /is/ it? It is, after all, a word whose only use is to join
two separate clauses in a specific (temporally ordered) way.

On a quick Google, I can find statements along the lines of 'Yes, it's a
conjunction, but it's not a /coordinating conjunction/ and therefore
can't be used alone to join two sentences', but I'm frankly none the
wiser as to, well, why not.

And after a couple of years of reading LanguageLog, 'because Strunk and
White / other grammar 'experts' say so' is not an answer I'm willing to
accept :)
