When I was using Windows, one of my favorite resources was
<http://snapfiles.com>. It has descriptions of many shareware and
freeware resources, with links to download and install them. (I
normaly ignored the shareware, and simply clicked on the "freeware"
tab).

There is a page of listing sfor desktop search freeware programs, with
a star ratings system as well to get you started.

As you are probably aware, there are also various incarnations of grep
for Windows, although I have no experience with them to recommend one.
