In this particular case I was moving from pubs manager with a team of seven writers to first writer for a start-up. I wasn't particularly concerned about what I was called, other than "better paid," but I think the company looked at the string of manager titles on my resume and thought something more than "technical writer" was needed, either by me or by the investors or customers I would be dealing with.
