What I do is sit down with the person who hired me and ask what he or she expects to see me accomplish in my first 30 days on the job.  I actually prefer to do this during the interview process, at the point where interviewee is inevitably asked if he or she has any questions, then during my first sitdown with my manager after being hired present a rudimentary plan for achieving that first accomplishment.  What a manager will consider "productive" from a new employee is not always what the new employee expects it to be.
