I suspect that they may be seeking a tech writer to author UML documentation; Use Cases, State Diagram, Sequence Diagrams, Business Process Models, etc and having this back ground would be beneficial.
They could also be using UML to drive the use of XML, and using the task base approach that UML provides, compliment a Structured Authoring or DITA implementation.
Not sure how common, but I would suspect that it will become more frequent as more companies are adopting DITA/XML.

Recently I've seen a technical writer posting that includes UML
modeling as a requirement. Unfamiliar with the term, I checked it out.
Based on the Wikipedia description, I'm wondering if the requirement was
just thrown in there, or if that's a common requirement for technical
writers working in IT. Or are they looking for someone who's written
code in the past?
