I'm currently documenting two similar products using FrameMaker. I
use variables for the product names, version numbers, and places where
the product name appears in paths (edit the properties files in
ProgramFiles\Product\config). I have a Product A and a Product B
condition for text that only applies to one product or the other.

So one more Yea vote for your plan. It has been working for me.
