You should check out the Cost of Living calculator from Salary.com.

You punch in your location and salary. Then punch in your target location.
The system calculates your buying power. 

I've used this calculator to judge offers in other states. 

For example, I live in Chicago and I get an offer to work in San Diego,
California. The cost of living in San Diego is 11 percent higher than
Chicago, but salaries are 1.5 percent less. 

Weight your job offer against that.

Subject: Question about pay rates

Anyone know much about pay rates in northern Virginia? I got a message from
a recruiter about a job in the town of Sterling, and the pay rate given was
50k. How does that sound? From what little I've heard in the past, I have to
wonder if it's above the poverty line for that area. 

Can anyone point out a good web site for looking up information about
comparative pay rates in different areas? I've looked at COL calculators
online and I get conflicting results. I'm not an STC member so I don't think
I can use their resources. And yes, I have already searched the list
archives and could not find anything useful to me.
