Since I am on digest as well, I have only seen a couple replies as of
yet regarding the use of Synergy and the like for document version
control.

In my view, rather than a straight version control program, using full
document management software would be far superior--although the
expensive ones like Documentum would be unnecessary.

Document control systems make version control rather simple, and are
obviously designed for documents rather than source code files.

There are many such systems out there; quite a few are open source and
free to use.

If I were looking to institute such a system today, one place I would
look seriously would be Alfresco--which has both free and paid support
versions of their system. Alfresco is headed by John Newton, who was
the original founder of Documentum, and John Powell, former COO of
Business Objects. Their solution is also very good for Web content
management and would be quite good for document management for your
entire company--not only for documentation, but for other company docs
as well. See <http://www.alfresco.com/>

I think you'll find the costs for the paid, supported plan quite
palatable compared to many of the alternatives.
