You CAN, of course, and it happens all the time, but the question is whether you SHOULD.  Same holds for starting a sentence with "however" in some schools of thought. While I think it all depends on your audience, I would suggest trying hard to find good alternatives. As David pointed out, anything that distracts your audience, such as a sentence structure that they find annoying, is generally not good technical writing practice.
