Hi, everyone. I guess my post finally got through on techwr-l. When it didn't arrive in a timely fashion, I sent a similar post to Free Framers, and a member there gave me the solution.

In case anyone is interested, I'm writing about resistor switches, which go from Open to Close to Open.

The preferred notation, at least at this company, is to use a right arrow, roughly -->, (Symbol font 0174, arrowright) between the O and C or C and O. I use the character in headings describing these topics.

When I create a cross-reference, like "See 'O-->C Parameter' on page 5," the special character comes through fine in the cross-reference.

However, when I update the entire book, the Symbol font drops out and I get the standard character. A Free Framer, Michael Müller-Hillebrand, tells me that this is a known bug that has been around in Frame since at least version 6. He was going to see if it still exists in Frame 9, but I haven't heard back yet.

Of course, the need to update a book file is inevitable. If you've corrupted your cross-references once, here's the way to fix them and avoid corrupting them again in the future, do this (and send your thanks to Michael):

1. Manually restore the cross-references to the correct font. To do this, select the corrupted ones and update them individually in the text. The Symbol character reappears.

2. Save and close all files.

3. From the book file only, update the book.

4. If you need to, open the files and continue working. All links will have been updated, but your special characters are still present in the cross-references.

I don't think that's possible, since the cross-reference text all has
the same character format and thus is all one font.
