First off, thanks for all the responses. I've gotten more useful
responses from this list than from the OO forums.

Not intending to get in the way or usurp Jean's debugging process, but
I'm unable to find this info either in Sarah's post here, or on the
OOo forums. So, Sarah, could you please answer these:
* Is there an error message/dialog or other output at the time OOoW
crashes? If yes, could you please let us know what that is?
No and yes. 99% of the time, there is no error message or dialog. I
either double-click on the file's icon to open it, or select File>Open
from the menu and select the file. In either case, nothing appears on
the screen for a moment, and then I get the dialog box stating that
OpenOffice has suffered a problem and is quitting. Next time I open
OpenOffice, it gives me a recovery-dialog box; when I tell it to recover
the document, I get a blank .odt page. Once, and only once, I got the
following error message:
* Have you gotten a procedure for reproducing the failure
consistently, preferably with a small sample set of documents that you
can share with others (I imagine your actual work docs cannot be
shared)? If yes, could you post the steps you take to cause the crash,
and upload a zip of your master doc + 2 or 3 child docs to a free
sharing site like mediafire.com, and include the URL to the zip in
your post?
Causing/reproducing the crash was easy: a
1. Attempt to open a master document.
2. Program crashes.
It did not matter if the master document had been created in 3.x or 2.x,
the results were identical. I tried ten different master docs, created
sometimes years apart, and got the same results.
I don't have a set of files I can upload; they're all proprietary. Let
me see if I can create some test docs that reproduce the problem.
* In what file format are you saving the master and child documents?
Master documents: .odm
Subdocuments: .odt
All are either created with the same master template or have the master
template applied after their creation. Styles are standardized across
documents.
