It means your scanner saved the file as an RGB with an Alpha channel
(extra data, such as transparency) and your graphics tools can't read a
TIF with an alpha channel. You need to find an app that can read alpha
channels (I'm not familiar with GIMP, there might be a plug-in filter
you can download somewhere), or set the scanner configuration to save as
a plain, uncompressed TIF and rescan.
