As one who has spent some years on a daily newspaper copy desk and seen
grammar slaughtered from near and far, I can certainly attest to Gene's
last statement. Most days, I need look no further than my own city
newspaper to see that the abuse continues.

This is another case where the common use depends on the reader's
assumption of context. "Forty six years in the news business has been"
really means "my forty-six year run in the news business has been."

And newspapers have never been great defenders of proper grammar, by the
way. :)
