My guess is that the stability and usability of Office 2007 depends in
part on how many previous versions had been installed on the PC and
whether you're working with documents created with earlier releases.
Could also be it works better on Vista than on XP.

My PC at my old job had previously had Office XP and 2003, and maybe
even 2000. On that PC, Word 2007 was basically unable to update
headers or footers, and frequently treated unlocked documents as
locked. One of the writers who reported to me had the same problems.
We ended up switching to OpenOffice. (At least the documents weren't
corrupted and unopenable, a problem I encountered with two or three
earlier releases of Word.)

We did >95% of our work in FrameMaker and text editors, so it wasn't a
huge issue.
