TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I don't recall "Spectrum" saying what the next step was going to be
after everybody voted, but it does appear from the last post that the
decision was made based on the dialog here and not by consulting the
SMEs further.
In a situation where the terms are essentially interchangeable and I
don't have a preference myself, I would be more than content to tell a
couple of dueling SMEs that neither of their choices is better than the
other, hand them a pair of virtual nerf bats and let them duke it out.
It's more entertaining than flipping a coin (which is what I'd tell them
I'm going to do if they don't reach a consensus) and I prefer to save my
energy for times when I actually care about the result.

I just don't think a competent, self-respecting tech writer should be in
a position where two SMEs decide between them what the content of the
manual should be, and all the tech writer does is "make it look pretty."
