Most modern style goes with your example, only perhaps
with a more grammatically complete lead-in: "The crate
contained the following items:"

I believe the only time the last item should end with
a period is if the list is using the style where the
items complete the intro grammatically, in which case
I think the other items get ending punctuation as well:

The crate had
- oranges,
- apples, and
- lemons.
