I think anybody who ISN'T bothered by this sort of thing isn't paying
attention. Unfortunately, the trend is toward more of the same:

- Google reading your email to determine how best to tailor ads to your
particular situation.
(I recently read a rant by a woman who was not happy to see all the
matchmaking and divorce lawyer ads appear after she received an email
about her
troubled relationship)
- Google tracking your surfing trail to fine-tune its website Adsense
displays.
- Spammers using graphic request data to determine which eddresses are
active.
- Supermarkets using discount cards to build a database of buying
habits.
(and the amount they pay you for that information is miniscule
compared to what it sells for)

This list could go on for quite awhile.

The real trouble with this sort of thing isn't that anyone cares about
the choices we make, it's that many people will be inhibited from making
choices because they're worried about their (not particularly) shameful
secrets, I suppose.

It's mostly just sad, and wearing, I think.

Does anyone else find this disturbing? I just received an email that
read in part:

"Our records show that although you have requested to receive the
"Digital Version" of Website Magazine, you did not yet view your latest
quarterly issue (Feb '09 - Psychology of Design)."
