Intrigued, I just checked this out but my British-localised copy of
Word 97 correctly (since it's a legitimate word in English if not
American) left "cooperation" well alone.

However, I can't find "Cupertino" in any of my English (as opposed to
American) dictionaries. Is this something like "zucchini" ("courgette"
in UK) that changes name as it crosses the Great Pond?
