Too many documents open at once?

Yesterday afternoon, I had a whole bunch of Word documents open at once and Word essentially had a nervous breakdown and bombed out with one of those error messages saying that "Word is being forced to close down."

Now I realize that the reality of Word is that it can bomb at any time for any reason, but I was wondering if having too many documents open at once is a "known issue." If it is, I can just try to avoid the situation in the future -- kind of like the joke where the guy says to the doctor, "Doctor, it hurts when I do this," and the doctor says, "Well then don't do that!"
