I experienced those recessions. In 1991, WANG LABS layed off a lot of
people, and the next day brought me and several other writers in as
contractors. That started a thriving contract writing business for me. Then,
in 2001-2, companies layed off lots of personnel but decided to NOT bring in
contractors at all. That killed my work for about 8 months. Right now seems
to be a hybrid. Lots of layoffs of full-time personnel, and some bringing in
contractors, but with some hesitancy.
