I suppose that depends on what you define as "legit."
If I'm looking for something authoritative, that pretty
much always rules out for-profit advertisers, bloggers
and the Wikipedia. In the early days of search
engines the sources I would qualify as "authoritative"
(government agencies, industrial standards, court
records, etc.) used to come up fairly quickly, but
these days more clicking is required unless we've
opted for access to paid databases. However, things
are not as bad today as they were during a brief
period a few years back when it seemed to me that
the primary criteria for putting a site higher in the
rankings was the number of hits it got in the engine.

Nonprofessionally, of course, things work just fine if
all I'm looking for are reviews of this week's DVD
releases or parts for my vintage stereo equipment.

I usually look to those blog entries and forum posts for some hints to
refine my search.

You must have different Google than I do. The results that paid to be in
the top three spots are... by strange coincidence... in the top three
spots, then the rest are legit (to some extent or other).
