Yes, it's that word "just."

I also agree (on both points). Good criticism does not assign a motive
to the action/content. If the critic has a perceived motive in mind and
needs to address it, good criticism would state it as a perception by
the critic: "This seems to show that..." or "It displays a desire
to...", rather than "You just want to...".
IMHO,

Well, David, I've observed government for too many years to posit that
ALL positions taken are predicated upon logical thought :) (That's a
twinkle that you see in my eyes).
I agree, however, that the "you just want to" negative statements are
implicitly ad hominem and do not, to that extent, address the logic of
the argument. And you're right, that's a poor excuse for criticism.
Jim

GOOD criticism is a good thing. Not all criticism is necessarily good.
---------------------------------
Yes, there is one type of criticism that I consider bad criticism, and
that's what I call dismissive criticism. That's the kind of criticism
that refuses to recognize that the object of the criticism is in earnest
about having a point of view they want to express or having a statement
they want to make -- the kind of criticism that ignores the fact that
whatever position some takes, there was a logical thought process that
lead to that position -- the kind of criticism that begins with "You
just want to cause trouble," or "You just want attention," or any
statement that begins, "You just want to ... "
