TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
It is a technical term, and versions of it exist in various programming environments. The user sees a pair of lists (that might be called "available" and "chosen"), and gets to move items from one list to the other.
There is no reason for the user to know what the programmer calls the thing, but most programmers writing documentation will naturally use that word.
As for the word itself, I agree. Wait until you have to listen to a PHB talking about how he wants to hire someone who knows picklist, but pronounces it "picks knowslist."
Put the word in your collection of reasons that tech writers are needed.
