I agree. Conditionalising words and phrases is likely to be a
maintenance nightmare. You could try using variables for straightforward
things like product names and operating systems. For example, if you
need slightly different versions of the book for product XYZ and product
ABC , set up a template for each, one with <product> set to XYZ and and
one with ABC.
