RE: Creating online tutorials

The tips I see posted so far are good tips, yet, like Geoff Hart, I urge you
first to define the instructional goals and objectives before diving into
the process of designing the product. 

Gregory Sweet mentioned the development ratio for online learning. Because
of the high cost and time-to-delivery for elearning, the planning process is
very important. You really need to know where you are going before you head
out on the journey. 

And that brings me to some semantics issues. A single eLearning experience
can be built upon one of several models, or a combination of them.
Tutorials, simulations, drills, and games, to name a few methodologies, are
not all the same in either structure or purpose. Each methodology satisfies
different types of learning objectives, or satisfies them in different ways.
Therefore, it is extremely important to understand your learners' needs and
characteristics, and define the goals and objectives of the program as the
first steps.

"Multimedia for Learning, Third Edition" (Alessi and Trollip) describes
various elearning methodologies, as well as a design process that works well
for most types of organizations. Having used it a couple times now, I am
quite satisfied with the results. You might try checking it out at the local
library.
